Kindergarten Readiness & PicTrain

Do a Google Search for “Kindergarten Readiness” and you’ll get a result of over 2.9 Million results in short order. Yes, you read that correctly, 2.9 Million results (and it’s probably already increased since this post was written). So what’s all the fuss about?

It used to be simple...

Kindergarten has changed over the past few years, and it’s not your grandparent’s kindergarten anymore. When many of us were kids, kindergarten (if you even went to kindergarten, that is) was just a place to go, learn to color, maybe learn to cut with scissors, meet new friends and begin to get a feel for what this whole “school” thing was all about. Not so anymore. Kindergarten has goals and according to many, many educator websites and publications there are also some goals parents should try to meet before their child enters into kindergarten.

According to Education.com, those goals are geared toward getting your children on the road to lifelong learning, and they can be broken down as follows:

  1. Amp up your child’s reading readiness
  2. Cultivate your child’s listening and sequencing skills
  3. Encourage your child to express themselves
  4. Promote patterning skills
  5. Teach your child colors and shapes
  6. Familiarize your child with the concept of time
  7. Help your child learn basic math skills
  8. Develop your child’s emotional maturity
  9. Develop your child’s social skills
  10. Foster your child’s fine motor skills
  11. Grow your child’s gross motor skills
  12. Build up your child’s basic knowledge

As parents ourselves, we know that this is a lot of things that a busy parent has to try to do — and all before kindergarten. And that’s one of the reasons why we created the PicTrain Youtube channel. PicTrain is a fun, interactive way to help young children learn these core concepts in a low-impact and at-their-own-pace manner.

Here comes the PicTrain! So the PicTrain is here to help! We’ve only just started and we already have videos to teach your child colors and shapes (#5 from above) and helping your child learn basic math skills (#7 from the list from Education.com) and each and every one of the videos we produce will help out with #’s 2 & 3: encourage your child to express themselves and cultivate your child’s listening and sequencing skills–just by the very nature of what they are! Many of our videos as well assist with #1, amp up your child’s reading readiness and we have many more videos in the works. Here’s just a list of how we’re helping so far:

  1. Amp up your child’s reading readiness
  2. Cultivate your child’s listening and sequencing skills
  3. Encourage your child to express themselves
  4. Promote patterning skills
  5. Teach your child colors and shapes
  6. Familiarize your child with the concept of time
